Do We Really Need 2 Operating Systems on our Mobile Devices?

I just happened to see this VMWare demonstration of two O/S's running on a phone. Does anyone else think that this is an overkill?

Windows Mobile 6.1 As an Extension to Your IP PBX

I just registered my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone to our SIP based IP PBX for the first time. I'm impressed how nicely the built-in WM6.1 SIP phone integrates into the device when you actually configure it!



To configure the SIP info into your WM phone, you need a windows mobile SIP setup application running on the phone. (Note:this is NOT supported by Microsoft...do it at your own risk!)

Will Windows Phone Kill iPhone?

Microsoft plans to refresh the Windows Phone with version 6.5 which will include some big updates to how Windows mobile works. Some things that are planned are gesture navigation and scrolling, ability to preview a voicemail as text when combined with Exchange 2010 and a browsing experience redesigned for touch gesturing.



For those of you familiar with the Zune, you might notice some similarity in navigation on the home screen below.

Windows 7 Adventures Part 2: Connecting My HP IPAQ 910c Mobile Phone

At our company we are tightening up some of our security measures (after sitting in a session by Dana Epp at SMBNation and getting his security tirade--one we needed by the way. ;-)

One of those measures is getting a security certificate that is not self signed for Remote Web Workplace and for our Direct Push email for our Windows Mobile devices. Our server guy told me all I need to do is drop a cert on my mobile device and click on it and it will be ready to roll.

I gleefully slapped my hands and thot "Now I can BREAK Windows 7!". I plugged my HP IPAQ 910c Business Communicator Windows Mobile 6.1 phone into my newly Windows 7 laptop with a mini USB cable. And waited for destruction! ;-) I was rewarded with a little notification down beside the clock that popped up and said "this usb device is not recognized". I ALMOST jumped for joy(?) that I had finally found something that Win7 wouldn't do right...but wait...automatically an install window with a progress bar popped up...Win7 was installing something...what?....and in a few seconds my IPAQ was fully installed and the below window popped up!

Not only had Windows 7 installed the driver for my PRECISE phone it popped up a menu after it installed (not nagging me to do something I didn't want to do like sync or something) and let me do just what I wanted to: just drop a file in a folder!

Since my efforts at "busting" Windows 7 aren't going very good I shouldn't bother to mention the the cert install went flawless too...

Keep tuned...my efforts to "bust" Windows 7 will continue...

ps--if Microsoft doesn't hurry up and make some mistakes with Windows7 I'm afraid it's going to be a smash hit. I didn't even talk about it's inuitive new UI that should instill fear in Apple...;-)

Will The President Carry a PDA?

The qwest for a secure pda for the President of the United States appears to have concluded. It is interesting to see that no one is exempt from technology and the issues that goes with it.

It looks like a device has been found that may solve the need for absolute security: Sectera Edge by General Dynamics. Is this device running Windows CE? Maybe thats an old picture. Given that lcd display seems dedicated to security, my guess is it is secure. And most of us won't be rushing out and getting one of these as the price is $3350. If you want more specs click here.

One problem that the "Sectera" does not solve is digital devices' ability to allow those who are not present to take time from those who are present. But I guess telephones in general have been doing this for a while already.

When An Audit Benefits YOU: Review Your Cell Phone & Broadband Bills Occasionally

I just had 2 experiences that surprised me.

The first happened several months ago. Landis Computer needed more bandwidth after doing with 2MB for several years. When I called our broadband provider and asked what it would cost to double our speed I got an astonishing answer that caused the rep to stutter: It would drop $1/Month!

Now just today (on recommendation from my good brothers) I've been working with our mobile phone provider, AT&T, to make sure our 10 phones mobile bill is optimized. After an hour on the phone with a very helpful rep from our Lancaster, PA store (Shawn Haag) we made about 10 changes to our plan which produced very pleasing results: we added unlimited text messaging to all our phones, we added 600 minutes to our plan, and we removed an unessesary data plan on 1 phone at an extra cost of -$2.00 per month.;-) The tweaks we did will save us roughly $100-$200 on an average month and our people will appreciate unlimited text messaging!

Take away:
-Audit those bills!
-AT&T can be a great assett in helping you lower cost--they can work FOR you.
-Faster broadband can eliminate VOIP quality issues. ;-)

In a September 2008 survey by Sheraton Hotels and Rseorts, professionals spill their PDA/cellphone habits. I thot the results are pretty interesting!

87% Bring their PDA to bed.
85% Sneak a peek at it in the middle of the night.
84% Check their PDA just before bed and upon waking up.
80% check email before their morning coffee.
35% Say if forced to choose, their PDA wins over their spouse (!)
85% Say PDA and cellphone enbable them to spend more time out of the office.
84% Say technology give them more quality time and flexibility with family.
79% Feel they can be just as productive out of the office as in it.
77% Enjoy life more with their PDA.
62% Love their PDA.

The scary thing is some of us at Landis Computer (we won't name names) are guilty of some of the habits noted above. Also we are hoping the 35% who choose PDA over a spouse aren't married!
